Day 36:
We are still working in the Union on our retail dining rotation. We got there to open the cash registers to be ready to start the day. When everyone started arriving, we went to our retail operations. I was to spend my day at Panda Express. I helped to do some prep for the day and was shown around the kitchen. It was a big production for such a small space. After doing a lot of prep, it was time to open the store and I was to help serve. We unfortunately had been a little understaffed that day and needed help from other retail operations to get through! I was a little bit stressed while I was serving because there were so many people in such a short amount of time! I got through the day though. Time really flew right through the lunch rush. It was great to be busy through it. I felt bad for Sara because the time went by slower for her because she was in Pita Pit where they did not have as many customers. Then after we closed, we had some time to start putting our final projects together from our previous projects.
Day 37:
Up early again to open the registers! We have definitely gotten into the routine now! After that, no one had really shown up yet and there was a lot of prep to do. So we started looking at Pita Pit’s prep list. Unfortunately, we had their prep list for the school year so we ended up over prepping for the day. Then after all the prep, I was to be in Pita Pit for the day. Once again, I ended up in the operation that was understaffed. We had some people call in today. So I learned how to build a pita and then how to work the register. I was on the register through the rush, which was just as crazy. This retail rotation has definitely been different than serving in the dining hall. We helped to clean up, and I was in the dish room getting all wet! We then had some more time to work on our old projects.
Day 38:
Today we were with the retail manager all day. She gave us a new project to work on. This project proved to be quite interesting. They were going to start selling hot dogs at the creamery and we were going to help write up the beginnings of it. We were able to write the recipes, work on looking at how they would use the hot and cold wells, and start to write the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). It was definitely an all day project, and I wish we had more time to finish it. It would be interesting to see how the idea turns out in the fall. It is definitely something I would like to follow up on.
Day 39:
Today we had cashier training in the morning. This might have been more helpful had we done this before we had to work the cash registers at the Union. Though, it was interesting hearing some of the customer service stuff. Then we were starting our CBORD training. This is the program that drives the food system here. It is where the recipes are stored, items are ordered, and so much more. We worked on looking at different things that you can add to the recipe to make it clearer and tried to apply them to our recipes. Unfortunately this meant staring at a computer screen all day, but we got through!
Day 40:
Last day of our retail rotation. We first started out in purchasing and receiving to learn how they operate things. I’m glad I don’t work in that aspect of it because they get up so early! Then we were back at retail for inventory. All I can say is inventory does not get more fun the more you do it. I wish there was more to say, but inventory is inventory. It will be sad to have to leave the Union by the end of the day though because we had really gotten to know the people there.
Day 41 and 42: OFF :)
