Every day is Friday...

Hello everyone, it's great to see more and more posts from interns.  It seems like everyone is having fun and learning already.
Our last few days have been very fun and different.  Friday we were able to work with Chef Min and the bakery crew again, which was great.  Chef Min taught Emily and I how to braid bread, which sounds much easier than it really is.  Our biggest loaves had six sections to braid.

Me, with my groundhog cupcake...

Emily, making a flower.

We also go to work with Sandy, who is excellent at cake decorating and showed us techniques for decorating our cakes and cupcakes. We made our "intern" cake to reflect our theme meal coming up in a couple weeks. You can check out their handiwork on Facebook here.

Our lovely cake!
We have been posting a lot about our busy days at UConn and not so much about our weekends.  This weekend Emily and I explored our campus a bit more and visited the Benton art museum, went to the Storrs farmers market, went strawberry picking, and explored the largest flea market we have ever seen.  The flea market is held at the drive-in movie lot, and it is expansive and great. We both founds some great gems.

After our busy weekend we explored a new aspect of college dining here at UCONN, the retail operations side.  The Student Union holds a few franchises such as Wendy's, Blimpie's, etc. , but also has a pretty unique dining area called Union Street Market with several stations such as burritos, a comfort station, and fresh salads and wraps.  It gets VERY busy during the school year, and even though right now isn't nearly as busy, Emily and I both worked lines in the burrito and comfort station and got a taste of how hectic it can be when the lines get long.  Susan Meduna, Terry Cook, Kimberly Burns, David Hille and Jeff Collins were a pleasure to work with (and very fun), and we learned a lot from them.  They also just opened a Freshens smoothie station, so we got to make Jeff a smoothie. He said it was good, but maybe he was just being nice to the interns. They are also on Facebook, so check them here!

Today we were able to work with chefs John, Charlie and Linda at South Dining Hall. Emily and I prepped for breakfast, lunch and tomorrows breakfast and lunch.  They were very helpful and patient with us.  I worked on making a roux for a large amount of macaroni and cheese.

Last but certainly not least, we went to see the bees with Manager Stephen Anthony.  The honey harvested from the bees is sold on campus. The bees are very active, and we were fully suited up to protect ourselves, though the bees didn't really care about us at all. It was amazing to see these extremely important and endangered creature in their element.  Did you know bees don't sleep? They work their whole lives nonstop? Amazing.

Well, that's all for now! Hope everyone has a great week at their new homes!
