Week 4 at Penn State

Time is flying here at Penn State! We are already halfway through our internship and having a great time.

This week started out with the four of us being paired up and sent to either the Warehouse or the Bakery on campus. Ariel and I were partnered together and had a great day at the Warehouse on Tuesday. We learned how the warehouse is set up, filled some orders, went on a delivery, and helped count shirts. While we were busy in the Warehouse, Andrew and Carla were having a blast in the bakery. On Wednesday, we got our chance in the Bakery and had a good time baking off cookies, participating in a taste test, and getting to know the Bakery crew. It was great to get to sample some of the goods too!

Thursday was a focus day for us so we could work on our Personal Projects. I met with the Student Nutrition Assistants to learn more about the Eat Smart project here at Penn State. Stacy, Carol Anne, and Laura were so helpful.

The week ended with our Intern Culinary Challenge. Each intern came up with a salad to make that included a protein and we had 90 minutes to prepare our salad. The judges were Chef Bill, Chef Mark, and Marianne (our amazing internship director). Everyone worked hard and had a great time. After the judges tried all the salads they decided my salad was the winner. I was so excited!!! Salad Elise will be slightly modified and served at our Farewell Luncheon.

The ingredients all prepped for my Salad Elise.

                                                                        Salad Elise

                                                                      Salad Andrew

                                                                     Salad Carla
Me with my winning salad; arugula with toasted pine nuts, peaches,
shaved asiago cheese, and grilled shrimp in a mustard vinaigrette.

I have truly been having a blast here at Penn State. Everyone has been so helpful, informative, and encouraging. And the friendships I have formed with the other interns are priceless.
